I wanted to write to you to express my increasing concern over the state of our democracy. I certainly care about important issues like immigration, inflation, abortion, gun access, and climate change legislation, but I don't know how a polarized and dysfunctional government can solve these issues. Both parties benefit by not address these challenges and then demonizing the other side in a fund raising campaign. The problems go beyond individual politicians. They are systemic and reinforce tribal partisanship, disincentivize compromise, fuel voter anger, and make elected officials unresponsive to voter interests.
In the next election cycle, I will be looking for candidates, outside my party if necessary, that actively promote and support laws and even constitutional amendments that strengthen our democracy at all levels. Here are some of the issues I will be voting on:
- Anti-Gerrymandering Legislation
- Campaign Finance Reform
- Ranked Choice Ballots
- Electoral College Reform
- Income Tax Earmarking

I am alarmed at the dysfunction of our government. American democracy is being crippled by a system that rewards tribal partisanship over compromise, relies on the corrupting influence of PACs and wealthy contributors, and feeds on generating voter anger instead of finding solution. The problem is not a few bad politicians, it is the set of rules, rewards, and punishments that govern and guide our politicians behavior.
We need action now. In the next election cycle, I will be looking for candidates, outside my party if necessary, that actively promote and support laws and even constitutional amendments that strengthen our democracy at all levels. Here are some of the issues I will be voting on:
